Two years after the tragic and mysterious shooting of two of their own ( SEE THIS STORY ), a visit to Father Holang's Missionaries of Poor in Downtown Kingston indicates business-as-usual for these Catholic Missionaries who dedicate their lives to helping Jamaica's poorest of the poor.
These photographs were taken at three locations: Lord's Place (care for children, the infirm, mentally unstable persons and HIV+ patients) , Bethlehem ( Hospice and care of handicapped and abandoned children) and at the Missionary's North Street address where two brothers were killed by one bullet as they stood washing dishes in 2005 (see photo below ).
The implications of that tragedy were really very serious when one considers that the bullet was probably meant to kill and not an accident as some people seem to believe ( possibly because its too embarrassing for the country to know that someone would actually murder people who dedicate their lives to helping the throw-a-ways of society).
Needless to say, many of the things I saw at Lord's Place and Bethlehem were quite difficult for me to handle, much less to publish, and if truth be told, there was nothing I could photograph that could properly convey the gravity of what these people do...as a matter of choice.
